Difficulty: Intermediate/Experienced (maker should be comfortable with color changes and handling multiple colors of yarn at once)


You will need to know the following techniques:

METHOD

ABBREVIATIONS

CH - Chain

SC - Single Crochet

ST(s) - Stitches


PATTERN NOTES

  • The pattern uses US terminology

  • Each box in grid pattern represents one single crochet

  • The pattern is worked in rows.

  • The pattern is worked from the bottom up.

  • The turning chain does not count as the 1st stitch of the row.


PATTERN

  1. Using the 4.0mm hook and the background color yarn, chain 56 and turn.

  2. Starting in the second chain from the hook, work a SC in each in the back bump of each ST(s) across, changing colors where indicated by the chart (55).

  3. Work rows 2 to 55 in SC, changing colors where indicated by the corresponding color chart.


FINISHING

BLOCKING

For a clean final look, blocking your piece is recommended before attaching to the dowel. For acrylic fibers, steam blocking is recommended. For natural fibers (cotton, wool, etc.) wet blocking is recommended.


ATTACHING TO THE DOWEL

For a tutorial, watch this video.

  • After completing Row 55, Fasten off and leave at least a 4-foot tail to attach to a branch or dowel.

  • Using the yarn needle, attach the piece to the dowel by placing a weaving a whip stitch through each stitch and around the dowel. Tie off and weave in the end. OR single crochet around the dowel to attach


HANGING THE PIECE

  • Cut 18” pieces of your 3 different yarn colors

  • Braid the pieces of yarn to create a rope.

  • Tie or glue each end of the rope to either end of the dowel.

  • Use this attached rope to hang the finished piece.
